Iola Scott at Winchester Galleries in Oak Bay

Cloud Comfort
Originally from North Wales, Iola emigrated to Canada in 1966, settling in Vancouver, and moving to Victoria in 1980.  Both music and the visual arts played an important part of her early life.  It was during these early years that she began taking watercolour instruction.  In the 1990s, Iola returned to painting in oil after studying at the Victoria College of Art.
She uses both brush and palette knife to build up areas of colour and textures, create rhythm and movement, and to capture the feelings and mood of a particular moment.

THE IMAGISTS

Six Victoria artists - Tony Bounsall; David Hunwick; David Ladmore; Laurie Ladmore; Paul Peregal; and Carole Thompson - are establishing themselves as THE IMAGISTS. Their inaugural group exhibition of paintings and sculpture will open at The David Hunwick Sculpture Studio, 211 Harbour Road (adjacent to The Point Hope Shipyard) on Thursday, December 2, from 6-9 PM. The show will continue until Sunday, December 5, at 6 PM.
Tony Bounsall, an emerging artist, creates digital imagery derived from photographic sources and "altered" photographic images. David Hunwick, a sculptor, has exhibited here and in London and throughout the UK.  He won best 3D award at the 2007 Sidney Fine Arts Show. He also gained prominence with UBC's recent Blue Whale Project. David Ladmore is an oil painter whose works have been exhibited throughout Canada and the USA. He has won the Honour Award and A.J. Casson Medal and he has just collaborated on a soon-to-be-released book called “Of Love and Water” with British poet Gerard Rochford. Laurie Ladmore is another emerging artist. Her acrylic paintings have been rapidly gaining popularity on the West Coast. Paul Peregal also paints in acrylics. He studied with Arthur Lismer of Group of Seven fame and much of his work, which has been inspired by Francis Bacon, R.B. Kitaj, and Frank Auerbach, figures prominently in collections throughout the world. Carole Thompson’s work is informed by travel and her interests in ancient cultures, astrology, biology, geometry, and metaphysics. Recent acrylics on geometrically shaped canvases have centered on the perceived properties and divinational uses of crystals and stones.
These accomplished artists have joined forces as “The Imagists” to support one another with regard to their individual aesthetic objectives and to share in the public exhibition of their own and others' works. They intend to contribute to a burgeoning of interest and activity in the Arts in Victoria, much as The Limners did in the 1970’s. Their first guest artist will be Tara Juneau, an exceptional oil painter whose work captures the light and beauty of her subjects.

Todd Lambeth- Artist Talk at Vancouver Island School of Art

Wednesday, November 24 @ 7:30
Todd Lambeth is a contemporary painter whose work has evolved to a point where concepts of illusion and absence dominate. Lambeth investigates the notion that expectation can create illusion, and argues for a definition of reality based on what is perceived rather than what is materially present.
Todd received an MFA from the University of Victora and attended the Alberta College of Art & Design and Emily Carr University of Art & Design and graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art & Design. Todd has exhibited across Canada in both artist-run centres and commercial galleries, notably the Edward Day Gallery in Toronto/Kingston, the Ingram Gallery (Toronto) and the Truck Gallery in Calgary.
Todd Lambeth currently teaches at the University of Victoria and will be teaching the Advanced Painting course at VISA in the 2011 Winter Semester.

Event is free of charge.

“Encaustic paintings seem to light from within…”

Encaustic literally means “to burn into”, but now describes painting with pigments dissolved in hot beeswax and other ingredients.  The technique is over 3000 years old, has been lost in history and rediscovered several times.  The colours are exceptionally bright, since light does not reflect only from the surface of the painting, but penetrates the different wax layers.  The surface textures can retain tool marks adding additional depth and interest.  When you see it, you’ll fall in love.

A curatorial project by Laura Feeleus (Diploma of Fine Arts 2010). Laura was inspired by the idea that birds are considered an empathic portal that enact behaviours recognizably human. Artists include: Sheila Norgate, Roy Green, Diane Kremmer and the team of Kimm Nightingale and Joke Mensink.

The Peninsula Plein Air Painters at Goward House

This group was founded around 1990 and many original members are still participating. These painters come together weekly to paint on site, have lunch and critique each other's work. All artists are local and some are recognized career artists. They create images taken primarily from the Saanich Peninsula and Victoria area. Employing media of either acrylic, oil or watercolour, each artist uses their own unique style and approach to painting. Sharing their individual techniques and experiences with each other often results in a higher standard of personal accomplishment and collective confidence.

Elizabeth Allen - November 2010 - Artist of the Month

DSC_0056 elizabeth allen
After years of “dabbling” with various mediums, I tried acrylic on canvas about fifteen years ago and was immediately hooked. I love the springy feel of canvas under brush or palette knife, the scumbling broken lines that can be created with a light hand and a bit of paint, and the soft blending of colour over a broad expanse.
My paintings contain primarily big sky, inspired by my prairie roots, and the play of light on water inspired by the west coast where I have lived for over twenty years.  I aspire to evoke a mood or memory of time or place that will resonate with the viewer and create an enduring dialogue.

Greta Guzek at West End Gallery

“Beach Roaming”
An Exhibition of New Paintings
Opening Reception: Sat. Nov. 6  1 to 4pm

Greta received her Fine Arts Degree from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 1978.
For the last twenty years she has lived and worked in Gibsons on the West Coast of British
Columbia. Having established a deep connection with coastal life here Greta uses her paintings
as the vehicle for her artistic expression. Her current exhibition Beach Roaming highlights the
idyllic qualities and intrinsic beauty of the West Coast.
“ As I wander the shoreline I encounter all the coastal mystique that so captures my imagination;
from the wild reclusive coves and log strewn beaches, to the corralled boats of the marinas and
totems left by other beach walkers. I feel connected to the elements and the stories that saturate
our shores, and it is these images that have become the subject of this exhibition.”

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday November 6, 2010

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

"In choosing the subjects for my latest works, I have concentrated on the linear aspects of flowers and still life, allowing colour and form to emerge with the use of strong natural light and often employing elements of chiaroscuro.  Contrast heightens the impact for the viewer and reveals the objects - flowers, glass or metallics to their best advantage.  I have a fascination with light playing on various textures (petals, leaves, cloth), reflective surfaces (brass, steel) and densities (water, glass).  A secondary motif that I explore at times is colour-related borders "imposed" on the works, creating a kind of window, adding energy and an element of mystery.  I find it quite magical - the manner in which a brush, pigments and paper can create a "reality": the illusion of three dimensions in two.  I hope you enjoy these works and feel the same sense of wonder that I did in creating them.".

Compositions from the West Coast (Series 6)
 OPENING RECEPTION
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2010   1PM-5 PM

“My visions and inspirations as a landscape artist continually take many turns as I'm always looking for that certain something that will inspire me and also the viewer to take a closer look at our beautiful wild, rugged Province.
In the case of this series, it was shells that I found on a secluded beach located just south of Long Beach on the west side of Vancouver Island.  I was amazed at the abundance of shells that had once led a peaceful life beneath the ocean, but are now left behind from receding tides, and have fallen prey to seabirds, bears, the sun, and now to brush, paint and canvas.  I captured many different macro images with my camera, and was able to extract a wide variety of detailed yet abstract like compositions, at times from one singular image.  The play of sunlight on solid and transparent objects coupled with subtle color variations all intertwined, proved to be the challenge in this series, but nevertheless found pure enjoyment within each brushstroke.

New Paintings
OPENING RECEPTION
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2010   1PM-5 PM

Joe Coffey was born in Caledon East, Ontario; his early years were spent on the family farm.  He presently resides in Victoria, B.C. where he devotes his time to his art.
Joe is a self taught artist; he has been called prodigious for his drafting technique.  His domestic animals and figurative works evoke strong emotional response through their atmospheric qualities and visual strength.  The subjects of the works are silent witnesses to the world and of our own consciousness.
"Life just seems so full of connections.  Most of the time we don't even pay attention to the depth of life.  We only see flat surfaces."          Colin Neenan

"In a world older and more complete then ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear."                                                                      The Outer Most House by Henry Beston.

Paintings: London to Stratford-on-Avon
Rasmussen's London to Stratford-on-Avon paintingsresult fromtaking her eye to the country of her father's birthplace, arriving the day before the British Election.  The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, to the London Eye, a huge Ferris wheel, London Bridge, tugs, barges, all along the embankment, then St Paul's Cathedral, Russell Square, its yellows in the frigid May air, Trafalgar Square, encircled with non-stop traffic, double decker buses, Nelson upon his column, the lions, the fountains – sights to the travelling North American artist with easel, oils, watercolours, panels and arrival at the painter's location. Pilgrimage to Stratford took Avis Rasmussen's London eye to Constable country, Salisbury Cathedral, where artists follow footsteps.  At Stonehenge she found a bench to narrate in paint the view of the timeless stone circle.
