“Encaustic paintings seem to light from within…”

Encaustic literally means “to burn into”, but now describes painting with pigments dissolved in hot beeswax and other ingredients.  The technique is over 3000 years old, has been lost in history and rediscovered several times.  The colours are exceptionally bright, since light does not reflect only from the surface of the painting, but penetrates the different wax layers.  The surface textures can retain tool marks adding additional depth and interest.  When you see it, you’ll fall in love.
Opening: Sat. Nov. 13, 2010   2 to 4pm
