Barry Doupe received his BFA (2004) from Emily Carr University in media arts. His animation videos have been screened at festivals and museums around the world including Tate Modern; Centre Pompidou, Paris; New Museum, New York; Drawing Room Gallery, London, UK; 2011 Sharjah Biennial, Sharjah UAE; VIVO, Vancouver, MOCA, Toronto; Whitechapel Gallery London; and Quinary Art Projects, Vancouver. 

James Kemp won the Circle Craft Award in 2012 when he received his BFA from Emily Carr University. He just finished his residency at the Port Moody Arts Centre. Exhibitions includes a solo exhibition at Port Moody Arts Centre, Leo Koo Gallery, Surrey Art Gallery and Ceramics Sculpture 2012 @ Quinary Art Projects. He is also the artist assistant to Liz Magor

Sean Mills received his BFA from Emily Carr University (2010) and has exhibited at Surrey Art Gallery, YACTAC, Elissa Cristall Gallery, Cityscape Community Art Space in North Vancouver and currently has a solo show at the Emily Carr Alumni Gallery in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Office Supplies Incorporated is the street name of Vancouver artist Joseph Grier who participated in WE:Vancouver - 12 Manifestos for the City at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2011 and Cut and Paste, the collage show at Equinox Gallery.

Marc Paris is in his final year at Emily Carr University and has exhibited locally at Quinary Art Projects and Mail Art Gallery. 

Anthony Sonnenberg is a Seattle-based artist who received his MFA (3D4M) from the University of Washington (2012) and has exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery and 2011 Texas Biennale. He was awarded a Pilchuck Emerging Artists' Residency in 2012.

Wesley Yuen is a Vancouver-based art collector who has founded several galleries locally: Project Gallery; Lobby & Space Gallery @ the Dominion Hotel in Gastown; and Quinary Art Projects which presents popup art exhibitions and private art advisory. He was a co-chair with the Canadian Art Foundation's Vancouver Gallery Hop (2005-2007); and was invited to be a member of the acquisition committee @ Vancouver Art Gallery (2004-2008); and President of Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver (2001-2003).

In keeping with his ongoing investigations into the mapping of altered states, Transcendental Capacity brings together a selection of Jeremy Shaw’s recent photographic and video works.
Using a Kirlian camera – an out-moded 1960’s scientific-cum-mystic device which electrocutes an object in order to capture an image of it’s magnetic field, or ‘aura’ – Shaw has recorded a series of experiments as the basis for testing the profound effects of music. While listening to various songs from pop history that are thought to have ‘transcendent’ qualities (through headphones, in the dark), the artist photographs his index finger (by placing it directly on Polaroid film on the camera’s copper plate surface and receiving a shock) in order to monitor their visual effect, if any, on his aura.

Jeremy Shaw’s work has recently been on view at MoMA PS1, Queens, NY (solo); MOCCA, Toronto (solo); KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Berlin (group); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (group). Upcoming exhibitions include Autocenter, Berlin (solo); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (solo); Mass MOCA, Massachussetts (group); GAK, Bremen (group).

Sean Weisgerber at Wil Abelle Art Projects Gallery

SEAN WEISGERBER: AFTER I SHED MY SKIN JANUARY 17, 2013 -  MARCH 9, 2013 Opening: Thursday, January 17, 7 – 9 PM.  The artist will be in attendance Wil Aballe Art Projects is proud to present a solo exhibition of current work by Saskatoon-based artist Sean Weisgerber. Since graduating from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2009, Weisgerber has produced a body of work in which specific modalities of abstract painting have articulated a singular fascination with the relationship between colour, form, material and perception. Typically, his paintings have been defined by opaque colours bounded by hard edges – an uncanny painterly dialect wherein human touch is modulated by a sense of the mechanical. This exhibition sees Weisgerber’s works move away from precision execution, and the subject matter of abstraction and perception, with the mechanical appearing less in the character of the objects presented than in the process of their making. Here, we see stalactites of latex paint, frozen in mid-drip, and suspended from the weave of stretched burlap and wool. Antiseptic chains supporting these objects insinuate their origin in a mechanical process – the repeated immersion of a surface in paint, leading to the development of factures exaggerated, and drawn into grotesque realms. In other works, the fractalization of colour that once appeared on the surface of canvas now appears in a radiating eruption on the gallerist’s living room wall. And while this storm of pigment does not capitulate to the bounds of hard-edged shapes, its chromatic beauty nevertheless does its work within geometric architectural boundaries. Mungo Thomson at The Apartment Gallery, Vancouver BC

The Apartment is thrilled to present an exhibition by 
Los Angeles artist Mungo Thomson. Known for his use of vernacular culture within refined conceptual frameworks, and for collapsing the social and the phenomenological in his work, Thomson will present a new 35mm slide projection work entitled ‘The Trail’, 2012, and a sculpture edition for his second project and first exhibition with The Apartment.

In ‘The Trail’, Thomson deploys found images as a lens for a quotidian notion of the sublime–specifically the natural and cultural sublime of Northern California between 1969 and 1984, the years these photos were taken, and, coincidentally, the years Thomson was growing up there. The images include storm clouds over the Sierras, rainbows over treelines, hikers on mountain paths and swimmers in lakes and waterfalls, children and animals, auto racing and a Rolling Stones concert at Candlestick Park–all viewed through the lens of a single camera. While Thomson recognizes these locales and tropes, they are not his photographs. Thomson frames this sequence of images as a social landscape–a set of instances of amateur feeling that lay behind and around the more formalized realizations of time and place that were happening in the Light and Space and Land Art of the same period.

Thomson will exhibit ‘The Trail’ in dialogue with a six-pack of bottles from his 2001 project, Royal Leerdam Beer Bottle Candle Holders. Thomson worked with the glass artisans at Royal Leerdam near Rotterdam, The Netherlands, a renowned factory that produces both rare crystal objects and glass beer bottles by the thousand, to produce an edition of mouth-blown lead-crystal Heineken bottles which he utilizes as candle holders.

Mungo Thomson has had solo shows and projects at the Aspen Art Museum (2012); UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2008); the Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2007); and Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAMeC), Bergamo, Italy (2006). He participated in the Istanbul Biennial (2011), the Whitney Biennial (2008), and the Performa Biennial of Visual Art Performance (2005). 
He will present a major exhibition of his work, TIME, Money, People, Crickets in 2013 at Site Sante Fe.

Michael Morris at The Marion Scott Gallery

MICHAEL MORRIS: BACK TO THE PROBLEM OF NOTHING

Kardosh Projects, in association with the Marion Scott Gallery, is very pleased to

announce Michael Morris: Back to the Problem of Nothing. On view from November 22 until January 12, 2013 the exhibition will be Morris’ first one-man show in a commercial Vancouver gallery in more than 30 years. Comprising both historic and newer images, Michael Morris: Back to the Problem of Nothing will feature works produced in a variety of media, including prints, drawings, and sculptures. At the centre of the exhibition will be City Deluxe, a newly produced suite of large format etchings based on 10 iconic drawings originally composed by Morris in the late 1960s.

Claire Fontaine at The Audain Gallery

 Human Strike Within Moving Images: Lecture and Screening  with Claire Fontaine - Saturday, November 24, 7 pm

 Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema, Simon Fraser University, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts As the Audain Artist in Residence for the fall of 2012, the Paris-based "collective artist" Claire Fontaine (aided by her "assistants" Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill) worked with students from the MFA Program at the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU and the MFA in Visual Art Program at the University of British Columbia, screening a selection of films and leading a series of seminars exploring the notion of the "human strike." Claire Fontaine's engagement with the students culminates in a final presentation and dialogue, featuring a talk and a screening of excerpts from the films she selected.

The notion of the human strike emerged out of the context of Italian feminism in the 1970s. It is an all-encompassing form of action challenging the fundamental contours of everyday life, moving through the politics of labour to the level of human social reproduction. Andrew Grassie at The Rennie Collection in Vancouver, BC

Rennie Collection is pleased to present the first solo North American museum exhibition of Scottish artist Andrew Grassie on until January 26, 2013
A casual glance at one of Andrew Grassie's diminutive, hyper-realistic pictures, one might think they are viewing documentation photographs of an exhibition or of an artist's studio. A closer inspection reveals Grassie's works to be carefully constructed paintings made using egg tempera-based pigments, an antiquated medium known for its permanence - a remarkable juxtaposition to the fragility and disposability of photography.

Rennie Collection has evolved over a number of years to focus on works related to identity, social injustice, appropriation, painting and photography. Bob Rennie has garnered an international reputation as a dedicated collector, amassing one of the largest collections of contemporary art in Canada. In 2009, renovations were completed on the oldest building in Vancouver's Chinatown to display the collection to the public. Rennie Collection at Wing Sang holds two exhibitions a year with supporting catalogues and events.

Nathan Coley Turner Prize Finalist at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, BC

Nathan Coley was born in 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland. Between 1985 and 1989 he studied at the Glasgow School of Art. From 1998 to 2005 he lived and worked in Dundee. In 2007 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. His work is represented in many international public and private collections. He currently lives and works in Glasgow. This exhibition is his first major solo showing in North America.

The Contemporary Art Gallery presents a major solo exhibition with British artist Nathan Coley, his first in North America. Comprising an exhibition across all gallery spaces and an offsite presentation, existing pieces are presented alongside Unnamed a major new commission.
Coley’s practice revolves around investigations into the social aspects of our built environment, working across a diverse range of media. Interested in public space, the artist explores how architecture comes to be invested – and reinvested – with meaning, and how through the competing practices of place these claims and significations come into conflict.
Running concurrently off-site, on top of the Pennsylvania Hotel at the corner of Carrall Street and East Hastings Street, Vancouver, We Must Cultivate Our Garden (2006) is a large-scale illuminated text work held aloft on a scaffolding structure.
