Paul Romaniuk at Luz Gallery

Taxonomies
Paul Romaniuk
Taxonomies is an exploration of creating a personal shorthand to understand the world around us, through two  distinct bodies of work  – Taxonomy and Classification.

Romaniuk’s work is informed by a scientific need to experiment; pushing materials and processes to make new expressive photographic images that blend the characteristics of painting, drawing and printmaking. Taxonomies is presented in two traditional processes, lumen prints and wet plate collodion tintypes.

Luz Gallery New location

We can't quite believe it either but it's true....
Lúz is moving to a NEW location in just a few days ! ! ! !

Three years after opening our doors we are growing and evolving into Lúz Studio & Gallery.

Bringing together our passion for fine photography, printing and bookmaking, with education and studio access we are relocating to premises that will offer better workshop space, printing and working studio facilities for printmaking and bookmaking, we will be able to offer studio memberships and rentals.

Our new location in Rock Bay Landing, Victoria's burgeoning studio district, offers an inspirational creative environment with a full rental darkroom, membership access to our Praga etching press and newly equipped bookmaking facilities. With this in mind we have added plenty of workspace, a professional grade guillotine paper cutter, and a lovely vintage book press. Expanded services include our custom inkjet printing for fine colour and B&W reproduction, traditional darkroom services for B&W film processing and printing, and coming soon a new custom handmade book service for artist's books, portfolios, or a distinctive way to preserve your family's photographs.

We are also expanding our range of paper & ink supplies for inkjet and traditional printing to include a comprehensive range of bookmaking cloth, tools and supplies. ** Just arrived a huge order of B&W Chemistry & Traditional Silver papers from Ilford !! **

Don't panic, we have not left our Gallery roots behind...

We will continue to exhibit fine photography, carry a distinctive line of photographic books and represent artists both locally and internationally. There is lots of exciting news developing on the gallery front, with our first exhibition taking place mid-Fall ~ more details will follow once we are settled in.

David Pollock & Jamie Drouin " Tracings " at Luz Gallery

OPENING RECEPTION Wednesday 18-May, 2011 / 7:00pm
David Pollock & Jamie Drouin

This selection of new photographic works by David Pollock and Jamie Drouin are collected under the banner Tracings. The word signifies not only what is left behind from a process, but also representation through mapping, which shares with photography the precise rendition of a topography.
Pollock’s large-scale colour landscape photographs, documenting the farmlands of Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsul are contrasted by Douin's minature black and white prints of unknown locations and fragments of urban topography.
In both of these works the artists share a vision of the shifting ground of their environment when presenting traces of activity that continually transform landscapes. Pollock's richly detailed landscapes, from his series Fertile Geometry, presents this elemental topography as a palimpsest upon which we discern the signs of farm work. Pollock places us within a deep open space where the vantage point directs our vision to the soil, which is the skin of the Earth upon which we stand.
Drouin's intimate pictorial spaces depict the macroscopic intersections of landscape within urban environments. The tiny, fragile prints turn the flotsam and jetsam of urban living into constructions as mysterious and visceral as a crime scene photograph. Extending upon the idea of Tracings, Drouin interrupts the transparency of the photographic window by altering the surface of the print. The scratches, folds and cracks mimic the markings upon the landscape but also refer to the utilitarian uses of photography as evidence or as reference, like a map.
Although stylistically divergent these photographs speak to us of the remnants of human actions and situate us within a continuum of constant interaction with the natural world.

INTERROGATIONS | Donald Weber
THE COLLECTOR’S EDITIONS.
All proceeds from the sale of the artist’s work will support the publication of the forthcoming documentary photography book INTERROGATIONS, which focuses on individual resistance to State Power in Eastern Europe.
To be released by Schilt Publishers, Amsterdam, in the Fall of 2011.

ABOUT THE BOOK After a lone trip to Chernobyl in 2005,
Donald Weber soon returned to the abandoned site of the nuclear disaster and spent the next six years in Russia and Ukraine photographing the ruins of the unstoppable storm we call history. Traveling and living with ordinary people who had survived much, had survived everything, Weber began to see the modern State as a primitive and bloody sacrificial rite of unnamed Power.
Interrogations is the result of his personal quest to uncover the hidden meaning of the bloody 20th Century. In dialogue with writer Larry Frolick – whose own ancestors had been decimated in the final months of WW II – Weber insistently and provocatively addresses his questions both to the living survivors and to the ghosts of the State’s innumerable victims, resurrecting their final hours by taking their point of view, and performing a kind of incantatory meditation over their private encounters with Power.
The policemen, working girls, thugs, dissidents and hustlers who inhabit these pages are all orphans of a secret History; the outlines of our collective fate takes shape in Weber’s epic work, expanding our awareness of what it means to be an actor in today’s dark opera.
