"Connect The Blocks" at Legacy Art Gallery and Cafe

Connect the Blocks is a community-based exhibit that invites you to map

your connections to other community members by drawing or writing on one
of our colourful paper blocks. We invite you to create and then display
your block alongside those produced by other community members. It is our
to goal to bring into being a community-created mosaic.
Connect the Blocks provides an opportunity for the community to
collaborate, connect through creative expression, and facilitate a place
for shared experience through discussion, participation, and reflection
upon how the activities of one individual touch upon the community as a
whole. Connect the Blocks is an outgrowth of a course highlighting the
practices of community-based exhibit design led by the Williams Legacy
Chair, Dr. Carolyn Butler-Palmer, of the History in Art Department at the
University of Victoria.

The Legacy Art Gallery and Café is located at 630 Yates St, Victoria, and
is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For

“NOW HERE’S THE DEAL…” Legacy Gallery and Cafe hosts political cartoons from WAC BENNETT’S private collection

The Legacy Art Gallery and Café hosts: Now Here’s the Deal an exhibition of original editorial cartoons from the
collection of the late WAC Bennett, from December 8, 2010 to January 23,
2011.

This exhibit features 33 political cartoons by well known Canadian
cartoonists such as Roy Peterson, Len Norris and Sid Barron. Arranged
chronologically, the cartoons provide fascinating insights into WAC
Bennett and the province of British Columbia.

The cartoons are complemented by eight text panels which provide
background information on the life and times of Bennett and the challenges
and controversies he faced.

The exhibit includes a 45 minute video, The Good Life, which was specially
commissioned by Bennett’s Social Credit government. Filmed in 1968, The
Good Life is a fascinating portrayal of a people and a province with a
distinct “retro” sensibility.

WAC Bennett was BC’s longest serving Premier, holding office continuously
from 1952 to 1972. His style of politics and governing provided ample
fodder for editorial cartoonists. Despite a sometimes rocky relationship
with the media, Bennett often requested original artwork from cartoonists
he admired and amassed a large collection over the years.

Now Here’s the Deal will show in the Small Room, complementing
Architecture and Power, an exhibition about legislative building across
Canada currently showing in the main exhibition space.

The Legacy Art Gallery and Café, located at 630 Yates Street in downtown
Victoria, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It operates

Graphic Radicals

The art of subversion comes to the Legacy! Graphic Radicals is a “themed” presentation of the work of World War 3 Illustrated, a New York artist collective, from the 1980s to the present day. The art confronts issues such as anti-war protests, squatting in New York, the tragedies of 9-11, racism, prisons and anarchism. Graphic Radicals includes dozens of works in the form of posters, graphic illustrations, paintings, banners and other media.

Local artists working in different media present their artistic expressions on the theme Hope in the 21st Century. Art Beyond Beauty attempts to provoke critical thinking on contemporary issues. The exhibition affirms and recognizes the role that artists play in their society.
Everyone lives with hope, but few think deeply about it. The thought provoking artworks presented in this exhibition remind us of the place of hope in our society. Artists, through the mastery of their media, challenge us to pay attention to the concerns and relevant issues currently in our society.
The exhibit runs from July 14 to August 8, 2010.

"Cross Connections" at the Legacy Art Gallery and Café

The University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery and Café presents Cross Connections: Five Decades of Contemporary Art in the Pacific Northwest, from Jan. 6 to Feb. 21, 2010.

The show features works from UVic’s newly acquired Coast Art Trust Collection. It includes works by the Trust’s founding members, James Felter, Kal Opré and Gregg Simpson, as well as works from each of the five decades represented in the collection.

UVic’s Coast Art Trust Collection comprises more than 100 works by 45 contemporary lower mainland artists. It includes paintings, sculpture, collage, mixed media and photography created in the latter half of the twentieth century. The collection represents a capsule history of Vancouver’s contemporary art scene from the 1960s onwards.

The Coast Art Trust Society recently donated this important historical collection to the University of Victoria’s Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery. The Society was formed as an artist driven enterprise to help preserve BC’s artistic heritage by assembling, maintaining and exhibiting visual art works and archival materials that document artistic activity in the Lower Mainland in the last half of the twentieth century.
