Beyond Persona collective exhibition at Dales Gallery

Disparate visions from seven Victoria photographers. This exhibition is a result of ten months intense work under the mentorship of Quinton Gordon of Lúz Studios. The photographers set goals to break through the wall of their self-assumed photographic personalities and protective masks, letting their true vision reveal itself through the work by going Beyond Persona.

Raincoast Reflextions Exhibit at Dales Gallery

RAINCOAST REFLECTIONS EXHIBIT

Of the coast, by the coast, for the coast

VICTORIA, BC, — See the splendour of the West Coast through new eyes at the Raincoast Reflections – Art, Information, Inspiration exhibition beginning October 24 at Dales Gallery.
The beauty of a place is often hard to capture in an image — especially a place as magnificent as British Columbia’s untamed coastal landscape. However, more than 50 Canadian artists have found ways to interpret this majesty through paintings, carvings, and sculpture. In 2012, Canadian artists took an expedition through coastal communities, First Nations’ lands, and the heart of wilderness to gain an understanding of the vulnerability of this remarkable region. With this adventure as inspiration, this  talented group has created and generously donated their remarkable pieces to the Raincoast Conservation Foundation.
The Raincoast Reflections exhibit will run from Oct. 22 to Nov. 8, with a gala opening in the evening on Oct. 24. The collection for the art exhibit is comprised of original paintings by Harold Allanson, Gaye Adams, Dianne Bersea, Carl Chaplin, Brent Cooke, Carole Evans, David Goatley, Terry Isaac, Sharon Rose Kneeshaw, Judy McLaren, Christian Morrisseau, Dorset Norwich-Young, Roy Henry Vickers and Alan Wylie. The art exhibit is sponsored by Dales Gallery, Maple Leaf Adventures and Turnham Woodland Barristers and Solicitors. The pieces will be for sale. Artist-donors will be in attendance and additional merchandise will be available—including a collection of the artists’ contributions in the book Canada’s Raincoast at Risk, and a short documentary.
Brian Falconer, Marine Operations Program Coordinator for Raincoast Conservation Foundation, talks about the region on which the art collection is based, “This [the Great Bear Rainforest] is the largest tract of intact temperate rainforest in the world, that’s why people are so connected to it, that’s why people are so emotional about it. And I believe it’s what has motivated these fifty artists to contribute their talent and their work—to try and interpret this and explain to Canadians why this is so important.”
The proceeds from the Art for an Oil Free Coast exhibition will support Raincoast’s mission to investigate, inform and inspire through the conservation and protection of BC’s lands, waters and wildlife.

Anita Rydygier at Dales Gallery

To interpret the creative expressions of the natural mind before we become adult, and to fuse together the child’s drawing with the adult’s vision is to comprehend art without convention or restriction, “without borders”.

Color stands at the center of human experience, human consciousness, and human expression, in fusing shape and color, I look to convey essential human experiences, essential human stories, in a way that everyone, adult and child, can recognize and understand.  Quoting Picasso, “Every child is an artist, the challenge is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, Anita worked as a textile designer, her printed textile collections were sold in Europe, the USA and Japan.  During this time Anita’s colour infused airbrush and gouache creations resulted in two solo exhibitions at The Actor’s Institute, London.

Whilst living in England, Anita also worked as a free-lance illustrator.  Commissions included Cosmopolitan magazine, Woman’s Journal magazine, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Chrysalis Records, and The Macrobiotic Association.  Private collectors include the Hon. Simon Howard at Castle Howard, York.

Anita moved from the UK to reside in Victoria, BC in 2001.  In North America Anita has selectively exhibited at her own gallery / store, WestCoast Eco Home in Fan Tan Alley, Victoria BC and at The Brill Gallery, North Adams, Massachusetts.

Stealing Time

Don Craig, Benoit Jansen-Reynaud and Matt Politano

October 29 through November 26
Opening Reception Nov 4, 6-9pm

Dales Gallery is proud to present an unusual view of the world around us. Not content with capturing the world they see, artists Don Craig, Benoit Jansen-Reynaud and Matt Politano employ alternate exposure techniques to photograph motion and the passage of time, creating landscapes invisible to the human eye.

Stealing Time brings together three different but complementary ways of seeing – a collection of elegant enigmas that challenge our perceptions.

Silent Auction

Three works will be up for auction and the proceeds will be donated to Doctors without Borders. We invite you to drop by the Gallery in support of a worthy cause.

Mary Feesey at Dales Gallery

 The Mary Feesey Show
 Opening Reception : Sat. May 10 @ 1 pm

In January 2014 Mary celebrated her 90th birthday with a houseful of family and friends, food and wine!  Currently she is still painting!

During her school years Mary received training from several inspiring art teachers, including classes with Arthur Lismer at the Toronto Art Gallery in 1937 as a 14 year old.  From then on she went to many evening classes to continue her studies in drawing and painting including 3 years at the Ontario College of Art.

All through the years of raising a family Mary managed to keep on painting and drawing and exhibiting.  Her husband, the late Arthur Feesey, loved to canoe and camp enabling Mary to photograph and sketch ‘en plein aire’ in good weather and painting indoors in the winter months. Her landscapes and nature scenes have been strongly influenced by the Group of Seven.

In 1970 the Feeseys drove across Canada and moved into the North Saanich area.  Mary quickly connected with the local artist community and for 43 years she has been an active member of the Saanich Peninsula Arts Crafts Society (SPAC), including serving as president and in various other executive positions.

Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s she showed her work in many shows:

1979-1989 with the Federation of Canadian Artists
1981 Art Auction, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
1983 Art Show at City Hall, Victoria
1985-1987 in the Gazebo Gallery
1991 in the Sooke Fine Arts
2000 a one-woman show at the Laurel Point Inn
SPAC shows every year including 2014

In 2012 Mary, along with four others, was honoured by the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula as one of the “Early Arts Leaders”.

Mary paints in both oils and watercolours and in later years she experimented with pastels.  Her work is in private collections across Canada, the US, England and Mexico.
