The Mary Feesey Show
Opening Reception : Sat. May 10 @ 1 pm
In January 2014
Mary celebrated her 90th birthday with a houseful of family and
friends, food and wine! Currently
she is still painting!
During her school
years Mary received training from several inspiring art teachers, including
classes with Arthur Lismer at the Toronto Art Gallery in 1937 as a 14 year
old. From then on she went to many
evening classes to continue her studies in drawing and painting including 3
years at the Ontario College of Art.
All through the
years of raising a family Mary managed to keep on painting and drawing and
exhibiting. Her husband, the late
Arthur Feesey, loved to canoe and camp enabling Mary to photograph and sketch
‘en plein aire’ in good weather and painting indoors in the winter months. Her
landscapes and nature scenes have been strongly influenced by the Group of
Seven.
In 1970 the
Feeseys drove across Canada and moved into the North Saanich area. Mary quickly connected with the local
artist community and for 43 years she has been an active member of the Saanich
Peninsula Arts Crafts Society (SPAC), including serving as president and in
various other executive positions.
Throughout the
1970’s and 80’s she showed her work in many shows:
1979-1989 with
the Federation of Canadian Artists
1981 Art Auction,
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
1983 Art Show at
City Hall, Victoria
1985-1987 in the
Gazebo Gallery
1991 in the Sooke
Fine Arts
2000 a one-woman
show at the Laurel Point Inn
SPAC shows every
year including 2014
In 2012 Mary,
along with four others, was honoured by the Community Arts Council of the
Saanich Peninsula as one of the “Early Arts Leaders”.
