The Resilience of the People exhibition

The District of Oak Bay in partnership with the Songhees Nation and The Robert Bateman Centre present: 

 

 

 

In 1916 an English visitor by the name of Alice Lisle spent a year in Oak Bay staying with friends at the Oak Bay Boat House.  During her visit she took photographs of Songhees village sites on Discovery and Chatham Islands and of First Nation entrepreneurs and residents around the harbour of Victoria. 

 

In 2016, the Songhees Nation and Robert Bateman Centre worked together to incorporate these rare photographs in an exhibit called Resilience of the People: A Visual History of the Traditional Territory of the Lekwungen/Songhees People. This exciting exhibit is now on display at the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, August 1 to 31^st, 2017.

 

The exhibit covers a visual history of what is now Greater Victoria, the Songhees First Nation’s traditional territory. Visitors will discover the complexities of the lands around them, and witness how the Songhees’ resilient relationship to the conditions of their ancestral lands has changed, including how their relationship has developed up to the present day.

 

The exhibit is open from August 1 to August 31, 2017 at the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. 

The exhibit will also be open during the Oak Bay Night Market on Wednesday, August 9^th 4-8pm and on Saturday, August 19^th 10am-4pm to celebrate Oak Bay’s Arts & Culture Week.

Sketchbook by Deirdre Kelly is an open book about her artistic process. The exhibition will feature sketches, photographs and drawings alongside works they have inspired in acrylic, oil and mixed media. Deirdre’s sophisticated, yet naive, style and her exuberant use of colour combine to create images that boldly tell their own stories. People, pets, and sea life lend their voices to images that reflect Deirdre’s political and social views. Sketchbook shows beginnings and progress along conversations that are nowhere near completion.

The Avenue Gallery is pleased to present Blu Smith’s 3^rd. solo exhibition, Rage, Rage Against the Dying of the Light. Nov. 3 to 14, 2016 

 “This dynamic line from Dylan Thomas’ famous poem, “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”, encompasses the essence of this collection. One of the central themes of my paintings has always been about capturing the light. It’s about the ability to harness that fleeting moment where the light burns with intensity or smolders with the glow of an amber. It’s a fight to hold to that perfect moment in life before it transitions to a different state and dissipates forever. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. “ 

BC born Blu Smith completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria in 1993. His mature style as an abstract painter began as an exercise to free himself from the technical constraints of realism. Nonrepresentational abstraction became a creatively freeing direction that evolved into his unique voice as an artist. His early influences included the abstract expressionists of the New York School, most notably Willem De Kooning, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell. Blu exhibits his work locally and internationally in Europe and the United States.
