Laura Rechwan, Nathaniel Churchill, Tai Dunkley-Whelon at Open Space

Vertical Gallery: Translation
PROJECT SPACE: March 13 - 28, 2015

ARTISTS: Laura Rechwan, Nathaniel Churchill, Tai Dunkley-Whelon
The Open Space Vertical Gallery project space presents Translation, an experimental immersive video installation by emerging artists Laura Rechwan, Nathaniel Churchill, Tai Dunkley-Whelon (Victoria, BC).

To make a sound is to alter your environment.

Translation explores ideas of macro-micro and locale can be expressed through sound and video projection. How does the impact of our voices affect the space around us, as well as the consciousness of the viewer?

The parallel dynamics between the fluidity of sound and water are traversed through an aphonic five-hour group journey along the coastline of Victoria, followed by experimental instrument and vocal recordings.

Review by Debora Alanna
with conversation excerpts between Pj Kelly & Debora Alanna
Full conversation & interview located after the review.

Pj Kelly: Focus? It is poetry. That is how I have been thinking of this.
Rhythmic and systematic structuring emphasises consciousness through intonations of layer placement, colour choices and somewhat edgy, jaunty juxtapositions. Frontier is a collection of terse verses, quick-witted visual poems. Frontier is, by definition and presentation, beyond the commonplace. Kelly describes states of being.
Pj Kelly: The dot is so unthreatening as a little, small unit of mark.
Debora Alanna: There are so many dots.
Pj Kelly: I have a lot to say.
Kelly stacks serious layers of dots, spotted overlays, deposits of thought that contrast and meld. Whirling with thought, sheets of clear or opaque or multiple layers and cropped sheets of medium or acrylic paint stratum elevate layers of her diminutive and larger works.
Her surface creations begin flat as poured acrylic paint and media born textures. Rolled and cut swirls, layers of thick and progressively thicker paint puddles and swatches are interspersed with acrylic medium layers, painted paint - the painted medium.

Kylee Turunen at the Gallery of the Mattick's Farm

March Featured Artist
Kylee Turunen

"Colours of the Island"

Public Reception Saturday March 7th 1-4

Kylee Turunen:

At the young age of 25, Kylee is an emerging Canadian artist, born and raised in Ontario and currently residing in Victoria, British Columbia. Growing up with the constant exposure to her artist father, she picked up an appreciation and excitement for creating art. She completed the Fine Art program at Toronto's Centennial College in 2009. Since then, she has continued to develop her skills as a fine artist working primarily in acrylic on canvas.
Kylee’s work has primarily been focused on nature, stylistically ranging from realistic landscapes to more abstract paintings. She works with colour and form, often playing with opposites like curves and straight edges, or light and dark tones to create contrast within her work. Painting abstracted art allows her to escape from reality, creating something completely original from a place only in her mind. While she enjoys the freedom of expression involved in this process, it also brings her great joy to recreate the beauty that surrounds her using representational intricacy within her landscape paintings.
Kylee is driven by the desire to see what she will create next as her work is continually changing and evolving.

A Long Winding Road
My Work transcends the limits of British Columbia’s natural landscapes, while still capturing the essence and symbolism of British Columbia. As a painter, my work embraces the experience of nature through the harmonies found within environments, the richness of colours, textures and the effects of light. The quiet walks along the rivers, oceans, lakes, mountains and forest trigger my senses and these experiences are what inspire the finished product.

My connection with nature has been engraved in my soul since childhood. As a child I remember spending many hours alone in the forest behind my parents’ house lost in my own imaginary games and thoughts. The forest became my extension of home, an area that gave me a release from the unsettling family dynamics in the home. I was not taught as a child to have faith but I guess I seemed to have found a sense of peace in the woods at a young age.

Now as an adult, I continue to appreciate the land in a dynamic way; nature brings me a sense of empowerment and strengthens my soul which allows me to create a place that is somewhat unusual. I like to see it as a manifestation from a form of a spiritual ground of my faith.

My photograph references are only a starting point of my work. I prefer to allow my imagination to develop my paintings rather than to create a painted version of a photograph. Before I begin to paint I feel it’s important to have a planned colour palette not only because it will make the painting harmonious but it would also create the right mood but yet, how it turns out is always a mystery. I believe my paintings can be said to mirror an active mind fetching something new and then registering it into the field of consciousness.
