Wendy Oppelt:

The human spirit and the splendor of nature endlessly inspire contemporary artist, Wendy Oppelt. Born and raised in Edmonton, AB, Oppelt found her way to Victoria, BC, via Calgary, Vancouver, and Adelaide, AUS. She grew up in a home full of artistic expression. Her father, a bigger than life character, was a professional artist and performer. The family home was an ever-changing canvas with murals on the walls and a yard highly decorated with flowers, sculpture and paintings. It was shortly after the passing of her father in 2009 when Wendy picked up her father’s brushes and began to explore her joy and grief. Her first piece of work was accepted into the Sidney Fine Arts Show.

Taryn Brown:

Taryn was born in Oliver, BC where she studied art from a young age.  At the age of 18 she won the honour of having her art featured on the cover and inside of BC Art Teacher’s Magazine.  She is a prolific artist who studied Art History at The University of Victoria. She received her BA from Uvic and lives in Victoria currently. Also, she studied in Malaga, Spain--Picasso's birthplace-- at the Instituto Al-Andalus in 1998. She teaches art at the secondary school level and is an active member of the FCA  (Federation of Canadian Artists) and competes in juried shows at the Federation Gallery in Vancouver. Recently she won an Award of Excellence from the FCA.

Elizabeth Allen:

Elizabeth Allen’s bold acrylics on canvas depict light and movement through the use of vivid colour and abstract design. Based on landscape, the images vibrate with energy. Broken colour and lost and found edges hint of the artist’s vision while allowing viewers the opportunity to “complete” the images for themselves.

Carmen Mongeau:

A native of Montreal, Carmen had a successful career in Information Technology in Ontario. She subsequently re-directed her focus to art with formal studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design. In 1997, she relocated to Vancouver Island where she established her studio. Carmen has studied with well-known artists in Canada and the USA. She has had several solo and group exhibitions in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia and is the recipient of several merit awards.

Kylee Turunen:

At the young age of 25, Kylee is an emerging Canadian artist, born and raised in Ontario and currently residing in Victoria, British Columbia. Growing up with the constant exposure to her artist father, she picked up an appreciation and excitement for creating art. She completed the Fine Art program at Toronto's Centennial College in 2009. Since then, she has continued to develop her skills as a fine artist working primarily in acrylic on canvas. 

Kylee’s work has primarily been focused on nature, stylistically ranging from realistic landscapes to more abstract paintings. She works with colour and form, often playing with opposites like curves and straight edges, or light and dark tones to create contrast within her work. Painting abstracted art allows her to escape from reality, creating something completely original from a place only in her mind. While she enjoys the freedom of expression involved in this process, it also brings her great joy to recreate the beauty that surrounds her using representational intricacy within her landscape paintings.  

Kylee is driven by the desire to see what she will create next as her work is continually changing and evolving.

Maggie Warkentin at the Gallery at the Mattick's Farm

For over 25 years, Maggie Warkentin satisfied her artistic and creative passion, as a professional interior designer. She was a part-time Interior Design faculty member at Lethbridge College. Also, she founded and operated Interior Innovations, Inc., an interior design firm in Southern Alberta, which was sold when Maggie and her husband, Vern, relocated to Sidney, BC in 2008.

In the late 1990s, Maggie ‘puttered’ in water colours for a couple of years. However, in 2010, when time became available to seriously pursue visual arts, she decided to investigate the many new possibilities available to express her love of all things creative. Originally self-taught, Maggie has taken several water colour classes since moving to Sidney.

In 2012, after coaxing from family and friends, she began to submit her work for exhibitions and art shows.

Maggie believes her style is still evolving. Meanwhile she enjoys exploring a variety of mediums as she continues to experiment, learn and grow.

"When I am creating art I focus only on 2 things: colour and movement. I am most often inspired by floral lines, or lines from nature in general. Within my art I see systems both external and internal which connect us all. I see arterial, lymbic. the most infinitesimal systems which keep us alive, but then also it is as if I am regarding the earth from beyond the atmosphere, and I see tributaries, inlets, and land masses all connected by colours orbiting through a spacial system more distant than our imaginations can reach. The colours do not always blend but move together side by side in a complementary way which symbolizes how I believe we all interact; we are all unique shades on a canvas attempting to find a beautiful harmony within and without ourselves."  Opening Reception August 8th 5-8 pm Featured Artist August 1 - 31 2013

Malcolm Noakes-Smith at The Gallery at Mattick's Farm

Malcolm's current works are large-scale oil or acrylic seascapes characterized by varying levels of abstraction. Each of his paintings is born of memory, as a rule he only paints from a personal photo or sketch of a location of personal significance. These West Coast seascapes have been his most introspective pieces to date. Absolute authorship is crucial to the process. Malcolm abstracts his work as a means of communicating the feeling of the location: the motion of wind, the sound of the surf, the texture of fresh sand.

The Gallery at Mattick's Farm featured artist for February is Donna Jessop.

Artists statement:
"Born in Alberta, I moved to Victoria in 1979 where my husband and I reside. I studied at The Victoria College of Art, Pacific Career Academy of Design, and Business at Camosun College. Extensive travel and art workshops in Europe, Mexico and Victoria have inspired my passion for Art. I continue to challenge myself by working with different mediums and hope my paintings reflect the connection, passion and vibrancy I feel when creating them."

Artist statement

"I think of my art as an act of defiance against dullness....My art is full of life, juicy color and energy. What I want to capture in my art is not an accurate portrayal of the subject, but the energy and dynamism of the subject. I mostly use a poured application with a palette knife and attempt to avoid any use of a brush at all, because I feel more free not using a brush. I want the paint to speak and move for itself."

"I strongly emphasize geometric design, balance, and solitude in tranquil settings and man-made objects. My work is defined by the linear interpretation found in imagery of the 21st century, expressed in the same or opposite context of these images. I feel we should not neglect tradition in life hence inspire to reflect this in my art. Inspirations are drawn from Turner, Hopper, Henry Moore, Hepworth and Hockney. Louise Monfette at the Gallery at Mattick's Farm

Louise Monfette is an emerging artist who after several careers is now devoting her energy full-time to her art. Her work ranges from the intensely personal to the whimsical.
Louise has studied at both Victoria College of Art and Ontario College of Art, graduating from VCA in 2003. She has won juror's awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists, Sooke Fine Art Show and the Victoria Look Show.
