Rebekah Johnson at Xchanges Gallery

Light based sculpture by Rebekah Johnson examines what else was folded up in the hope chest with the linens - fear? anticipation? hope? passion? What replaces these items as time goes on - wedding dress, baby clothes - contentment? disillusion? love?' Cedar chests, illuminated from within, reveal layers of words cut from vellum and chart the history of hope - and the path of a life - through the handwriting of mother, cousin and daughter - layered on each other as the generations are, and reflecting the arc of time and the changes in attitude towards marriage in the last 60 years. Also featured is a hand-rendered by the artist on vellum loose-bound copy of Anton Chekhov's short story 'The Trousseau'
