Jillan Valpy–September 2011–Artist of The Month
My background and passion for early ethnic costume design, textiles and handicraft prompted a material based practice where I play with the binary context of the masculine and feminine of materiality. My contemporary industrial structures feature rubber and metal that include a variety of other petroleum and industrial based media. The reuse of vast amounts of rubber alludes to the gluttonous waste of the oil industry and pokes fun at the absurdity and abundance of this rubber waste. Interestingly, reprocessed rubber is very textile like and funny in a comical sense. By further process and application of painting, sewing, weaving, and drawing, soft rubber forms emerge which are supported by exposed steel armature or architectural structures. Both experiential and object my work also references anthropomorphic figures and structures of a fantastical science fiction landscape. It is important that my work entertains and fascinates people. I like creating objects and installations in social environments for curiosity and interaction between people.
