After months of discussions, Brian Grison has agreed to collaborate with exhibit-v! Brian will write a monthly column, Brian Grison's Words on Art-Words, in our blog in which he will share his thoughts about the visual arts and art-writing in Victoria. We thank him for taking time from his busy schedule to support exhibit-v and the visual art community.
For those of you not familiar with Brian here a Biographic Statement he wrote for us:
Brian Grison was born in Toronto in 1947. He is a graduate of the Art Department of Central Technical High School in Toronto. He also has two Honours Batchelor Degrees from the University of Victoria, Fine Arts (Visual Arts) and Art History. He has also completed a Masters Degree in Canadian Art History at Carleton University, Ottawa.
After living in Mexico from late 1967 to early 1969, Grison taught drawing and painting in the Art Department of Central Technical High School for seven years. In 1975 he taught drawing at York University, and since then he has taught at universities, art schools and community colleges in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.
Grison's first exhibition was in 1969. Since then he has participated in solo and group exhibitions in commercial, public and artist-run galleries throughout Ontario and British Columbia, as well as in New York, Paris and Belgrade. His most recent solo exhibition, a series of small drawings, Relics of Prester John, appeared at Deluge Contemporary Art in Victoria in February 2010. He is now working on a new series of drawings for which he is organizing exhibitions in public galleries in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
In 1975 Grison received the first of a dozen grants from the Ontario Arts Council. In 1992 a grant from the Canada Council allowed him a year of work and travel in Italy, followed by a month in each of Switzerland, England and New York.
In 1975, the Art Gallery of Ontario purchased a small selection of his drawings. Since then his art has been purchased by other public collections in Ontario and British Columbia, including, among others, the Surrey Art Gallery, Art Bank, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the National Archives and Library.
Since 2004 Grison has regularly published articles and exhibition reviews in Canadian and American art magazines, including, among others, Border Crossings, Canadian Art, Galleries West and Vie Des Arts.
He has written essays for exhibition catalogues published in Victoria, Vancouver and the United States. Between late 2005 and July 2010 he wrote a monthly column for Focus magazine in Victoria. He recently began a new art column for Y.A.M. a relatively new local magazine.
