Emily's Revenge: More Victoria Modernism
Many observers have noted the lonely position long held by Emily Carr as the sole torchbearer of Modern Art in this city; but eventually she was followed by a vigorous crowd of artists eager to take up that torch and try to set stuffy Victoria's soul alight. Mercurio Gallery is offering a dazzling selection of works by these local luminaries, including members of the Limners and some of their more and less well known contemporaries and successors.
Each week will give prominence to a different pair of these artists:
Week Two - Margaret Peterson and Molly Privett, vital participants in the Modernist scene.
Week Three - early work by Michael Morris, a significant next generation Victoria artist, also Colin Graham, the catalyst for change at the helm of the Victoria Art Gallery.
Week Four - Flemming Jorgensen and Ina Uhthoff, artists and teachers par excellence.
Also Ciccimara, Bates, Siebner et al.
