Tracey Nelson & Alison Pebworth at Open Space

Beautiful Possibility

Like the medicine wagon or the Wild West show, Beautiful Possibility tours the Northern United States and Southern Canada. San Francisco artist Alison Pebworth journeys to Victoria with her painted canvas sideshow banners re-telling American history.
Pebworth plans to use Open Space as headquarters for more focused regional research. Elaborate typography, enigmatic phrases and historical figures challenge Americaness at the intersections of Native and European American histories. Pebworth invites local history buffs, artisans, folklorists, cultural theorists, native guides and well-rounded know-it-alls to share their experience and expertise in the portrayal of their fair region of North America.

Walls of Intrigue and Cabinets of Curiosity

Walls of Intrigue and Cabinets of Curiosity makes the most of our shared delight in monkey business. Victoria artist Tracey Nelson places “monkey” imagery at the centre of her installation with scores of handcrafted monkeys as well as paintings and video with monkey characters and a robotic drawing machine.
Tracey Nelson mobilizes the nostalgic affection for sock monkeys into a compelling study of DIY cultures, collecting, crafting, play theory and the tangled relationships between culture, nature and technology.
