Miles Lowry at Mercurio Gallery

We are proud to present a show of Miles Lowry's work, "Saints of Circumstance", opening Thursday, May 6th. For this show we are featuring Miles' new body of work: an enigmatic, energetic selection of paintings on distressed paper. Painted in opulent colours and sprayed with a layer of pure pigment and beeswax, the work evokes spiritualist "ghost" prints, street photography and the grace of religious images. These new pieces have a hazy depth to them, as in the first piece attached here, "Rimbaud", which draws the eye below the surface to the vibrating colours within.

An established West Coast artist, Miles is well-known in Victoria for his ongoing series of cast fibre figures, which have established him as one of Western Canada's most versatile contemporary artists. He has been exhibiting since 1981, and also designs for theatre, dance and film in Victoria. The second piece attached is one of Miles' cotton fibre masks, shimmering with bright pigment.

We'd like to extend an invitation to you to join us at Miles' artist reception from 5pm onwards to honour the work, drink a glass of wine and have an opportunity to chat with Miles. We will, however, unveil the show at our regular opening hour of 11am if you prefer to visit us during the day.
We will be closed on Wednesday, May 5th in order to set up the show -- but if you're in the neighbourhood, feel free to knock on the door for a peek. We look forward to seeing you at the reception and having the opportunity to present Miles' exciting new work.
