George Littlechild-January 2010 -Artist of The Month !

For his passion,love and dedication to his art we chose George Littlechild Artist of the Month !

George Statement:
If I were to ask myself why I create the art I do; I would have to answer:" It is what I was born to do. It is my passion, my joy, as my art has been there throughout my life's journey ".
If I were asked what kind of art I create; I would answer by saying, " It is art that speaks from the heart, the social and the political." My art is charged with energy and colour, vibrant, magical, and thus enabling the soul to travel.
I envision, I rely on the intuitive, the spiritual, the emotional.To tell stories through my art. I am a story teller, a visualist. A conveyer of messages...
I began to create art as a small boy,. My foster mother saw that I had a talent, at a very young age. She was encouraging, loving ....she saw the gift in me.
Scribbelers were filled. art lessons began a early age... art school, exhibition and books, lectures and teaching.
In First Nations cultures we do not have a word for art, as all thing s in life emulate art...
Out of my imagination an personal journey images are derived, sometimes haunting, sometimes wismical...all things intuitive are also my influence !
Brilliant colour, evocative portraits fill paper and canvass....homage pieces to the past....photographs of Chiefs and those that bare/bore witnesses to the historical situations First Nations people in Canada experienced are evident in my work!
As an artist, story teller, educator, writer, sometimes cultural worker....I see my role as important one, as we are living in a time of change; artists are seers; and that is our roll in society!
