Artist Joanne Thomson

“Bottled at the Ciderhouse”

If you have you ever felt bottled-up, loved, ignored or liberated then you will enjoy this exhibition. Joanne Thomson’s Bottled series explores what it is to be a human trying to communicate with other humans and uses the bottle as a metaphor for the human condition. These works are colourful and visually appealing however, their biggest attraction is that they invite us into a private world where we can see ourselves reflected. Thomson’s laughter and compassion fill the works with layers of meaning, inviting us to see our own stories. What better place to see this type of work than at Sea Cider? The walls are high, the light is great, and the layers of meanings in Thomson’s visual poetry reveal themselves more easily after a glass or two.

June 3rd to July 27th, 2009
at the Sea Cider Farm and Ciderhouse
2487 Mt. St. Michael Road, Saanichton.

Artist Marc Roder

The works at the View Art Gallery in Victoria BC, Canada are from a body of work based on a natural history being recreated by a man of unknown origin. This man has awakened with no idea of his name or age, and only fugal bits of memory. He wanders in a quite isolated and thinly populated area, and finds that in addition to not understanding the language spoken by the random people he encounters, he himself has been rendered mute.He has clearly had some sort of accident or coma, a sleep. He is in the most real sense "disoriented", and decides to sketch in order to piece together what has happened: bits of objects, constructions from memory, things he sees, dreams that tell of a past that looks little like the present in which he wanders. Some of the drawings are made from visions of animals that come to him from a past place he has experienced. The visions haunt him at times-he sees the creatures in surrounding rocks and trees, yet isn't sure if they are based on imaginary animals he has invented to fill the vacuum of his memory.
He does have enough recollections of large machines, and finds mountains heaped with various remains, including bits and pieces of metal. He fabricates some rude implements to help him travel, hunt and so forth.Oddly, various clear images of magnets arise in his dreams.Among other clear but mysterious knowledges, he has retained an understanding of magnetism, gravity and attraction.Naturally he wonders if this might not be a key to recovering his past.
I was curious about his sketches, which I have attempted to enlarge and reproduce in oil on canvas. They are done form memory.

Dale Roberts-June 2009- Artist of the Month !

The sea and survival are elements that have influenced Dale Robert’s life and art. He has developed a series of ‘Networks’ to express his intimate relationship with tides, flotsam and jetsam on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts. A nautical chart is essential for a sea journey... ropes, nets, reels and so forth. Ocean debris is found, gathered, arranged and fastened together and launched into the sea, then later retrieved and renovated. This is a process of creating art but it is also the course of a life’s journey - collecting experiences, using guides, venturing into the unknown, emerging damaged, then becoming revitalized.

If we draw a parallel between the ‘Networks’ and neural activity of the brain in the creation of an idea, we can begin with the structure called Conception. The piece Witless appears to be the aftermath of a brainstorming session. There is a conglomeration of ideas connected but in a highly disorganized fashion. One can perceive and relate to the history of the piece. As an entity there is a quality of presence that evokes an emotional response and an appreciation of the creative results of human and nature working together.

Sandra Doore
Primal Sense
May 15 to June 13, 2009
Victoria, B.C.

These sculptures, composed of pre-fabricated clothing morphed with nylon spandex forms, hover between the poles of human regeneration and dissolution, suggesting working organs and growing malignancies co-existing in the realm of fashion and embellishment. Sensual and chromatically intense, Doore's work aims to explore the mania of consumption as it relates to the creation of the self—external forces that conspire to make us both more, and less, human.

Sandra Doore received her BFA from the University of Victoria and an MFA from San Diego State University in 2007. For the past few years her interest in consumer culture and how it affects our sense of self has influenced her art making. Doore has exhibited her sculptures nationally and in the US, most recently at Comox Valley Art Gallery, Open Space in Victoria (2008) and Art Produce in San Diego. Doore has also undertaken curatorial initiatives in the form of exhibition exchanges between Victoria and San Diego. Currently she is an instructor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria and at the Vancouver Island School of Art.
