Dale Roberts-June 2009- Artist of the Month !

The sea and survival are elements that have influenced Dale Robert’s life and art. He has developed a series of ‘Networks’ to express his intimate relationship with tides, flotsam and jetsam on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts. A nautical chart is essential for a sea journey... ropes, nets, reels and so forth. Ocean debris is found, gathered, arranged and fastened together and launched into the sea, then later retrieved and renovated. This is a process of creating art but it is also the course of a life’s journey - collecting experiences, using guides, venturing into the unknown, emerging damaged, then becoming revitalized.

If we draw a parallel between the ‘Networks’ and neural activity of the brain in the creation of an idea, we can begin with the structure called Conception. The piece Witless appears to be the aftermath of a brainstorming session. There is a conglomeration of ideas connected but in a highly disorganized fashion. One can perceive and relate to the history of the piece. As an entity there is a quality of presence that evokes an emotional response and an appreciation of the creative results of human and nature working together.
